If you're planning a trip to Charleston, I highly recommend you check out Candlefish. What's Candlefish, exactly? Well it's a few things- a shop with gifts and candles (both their own brand and lots of private label brands) but also has a workshop component, which is really unique. One of my responsibilities was manufacturing candles back when I worked in the cosmetics biz, so I felt right at home taking the class. But you need zero experience to enjoy a Candlefish workshop. Read on to get the scoop!
We were in town for my sister in law's bachelorette weekend and wanted to do something a little different as a group activity. I don't know anyone who doesn't love a candle, so to be able to create your own one is like a dream come true!
Candlefish offers group workshops regularly (check their website for specifics.) You can also do a private workshop but that costs extra and we didn't mind having additional people with us. The more, the merrier! The workshop is $55 per person and included in that price are all of the supplies (wax, wicks, 2 glass jars, etc.) and a thorough breakdown of everything you need to know about candles and fragrance from their "chandler" aka candle making expert.
Each person gets to choose their own fragrance from Candlefish's fragrance vault- they have 100 scents but let you pick from a smaller number of options- fear not, there are plenty and there's something for everyone! Once you pick your scent, you get started making the candles. The chandler walks you through everything, from measuring and pouring to mixing and labeling. The candles have to cool overnight and Candlefish graciously packed up all of our candles for us to pickup the next day. Alternatively, you can have them shipped to your home.
Also to note! The workshops are BYOB. Since we were celebrating our bride to be, we brought prosecco, orange juice, fruit, cheese, and crackers. Candlefish provides glassware and bottle openers as well as coffee and water. Everything is well thought out and the staff is incredibly accommodating.
Our group of ten ladies absolutely loved the experience! It was informative, interactive and so much fun. And I have to say, enjoying a candle that you personally made is pretty cool!
Candlefish is located in downtown Charleston at 71 Wentworth Street. If you're in Atlanta, there's a location there too!
