Back in January, I put myself on a clean eating cleanse. I cut out dairy, gluten, soy, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, nightshades, eggs, dried fruit, etc. etc. etc. The program was 2 weeks, but I've kept many of the principles with me to this day (no dairy, no gluten, and minimal caffeine.) My skin!? It has been considerably clear and bright. But nothing in my beauty routine had changed...
I knew it was all about what I was putting (or not putting) in my body.
Besides cutting out things mentioned above, I've been religiously sipping on these drinks, which I attribute to my clear, healthy complexion.
Yogi Skin Detox Tea
On the cleanse, I cut out all caffeine. yup, that's right- no coffee or black tea. I went crazy at the store and stocked up on lots of herbal teas to compensate. Skin detox is very earthy but addicting (you'll be hooked, I swear.) And it's the prettiest crimson color. It's chock full of rose, red clover, burdock, and hibiscus- all cleansing and very healing herbs! I add a few drops of stevia for some extra sweetness.
When I got the flu, I luckily didn't get an extreme version. My doctor told me my immunity was very high. Turmeric is an anti inflammatory and antioxidant. It may prevent the process of aging. (yes!) It works wonders when applied topically, but you can reap its benefits by drinking it. I purchase the actual root and juice it, along with ginger and lemon. But you can experiment with the spice version of it. It's definitely an acquired taste, but one I'm happy to embrace for all the wonders it brings!
Non Dairy Milk
The switch from dairy to non dairy was surprisingly easy. I've been enjoying almond milk, cashew milk, and coconut milk for all my recipes. Of course, homemade is best but it can be time consuming to make. I look for store bought brands without carrageenan (Whole Foods and Trader Joe's stock them.) When you quit dairy, you will see just how little you actually need it. I don't miss it one bit. But then again it's too cold to think of ice cream, now isn't it? Also to note, 75% of the population is unable to properly digest dairy. Now, perhaps that's why your tummy rumbles and poof- a pimple appears after a dairy-laden meal!
And last but not least...
And lots of it. for me, I aim for at least 1 gallon a day. A good rule of thumb is to divide your weight in half and then consume that number in ounces daily. It flushes out toxins and keeps me from snacking all day. Water keeps our skin supple, youthful, hydrated. And in turn keeps blemishes and acne at bay. So much so that, before my wedding, I drank as much water as I could stand to maintain a clear complexion. It worked. And all day, every day, you'll find me with a glass of water in hand.
Do you have any secrets for clear skin? Anything I should be adding to my drink repertoire? Spill them, I'd love to know your tips!
