My most treasured hobby is anything related to flowers- admiring, growing, arranging, just being in their presence. If you follow me on any form of social media, many of the things I post are florally focused. I grew up in a family of gardeners- all of them with a knack for growing beautiful things. Talk about green thumbs. Heck, these folks have green heads, shoulders, knees and toes... you get the idea.
I wasn't interested in gardening or getting dirty as a child, much to my mother's dismay. I can recall a vivid memory of planting a row of trees with her- on my hands and knees, dirt under my fingernails, dirt in my eyes, sweating, walking back and forth to the compost pile for good soil. Seriously, why did she toss everything in that pile of crap!? Somehow, this all changed as I entered my twenties. I soon understood why 14 years of decomposed stuff makes for happy, healthy plants.
Fast forward to 2012: my husband and I did all of the florals for our wedding. Crazy? A bit. But we were up for the challenge. This exercise deepened the love we share for flowers. It also kept us both incredibly zen leading up to the big day. Nowadays I buy cut flowers or use my own home grown ones and make arrangements pretty regularly. It's a creative expression and outlet for me since I'm not a painter, crafter, DIYer, etc. Flowers are my thing.
